Pearl & Willow feature in You & Your Wedding’s 25th Birthday Issue

You and Your Wedding showcased a number of our beautiful pieces in the special issue of the magazine.

Polly Edwards was order of the day and her stunning 2010 collection was featured throughout. We have to agree with the editors choices as they featured some of our absolute favourites including the camelia headdress, the coco earrings and the Josephine hair comb.

A Fabledreams headdress was also featured in the ‘Enchanted Wood’ shoot. We showcase an alternative haircomb, made with the same beaded flowers, the ‘flower hair comb’ is available for £120

The coco earrings were featured with a fun flirty dress from Ian Stuart. However if you see any pieces from our designers which we do not show on the site, simply email info@pearlandwillow.co.uk and we will do our best to get the item ordered for you.

Polly Edwards' words of wisdom

The Asymmetric headdress is proving popular for 2010 due to the fact that the headdress can be worn with any hairstyle, and particularly compliments brides who have a side parting or asymmetric design on their gown.

Polly Edwards’ 2010 collection features a beautiful array of asymmetric pearl headdresses with Polly believing that headdresses with pearls in their design are often the easiest way to soften a bride’s look and work well with gowns that have lace detailing and organic motifs.

Polly suggests that the detail of an asymmetric piece is worn on the side of your parting or the opposite side of any detailing on your dress. They can also work well with veils. The position of the asymmetric sits flatteringly in front of it when worn and should you choose to remove the veil after the ceremony; the hair piece will remain to compliment your evening look.

Although its hard to choose because we love all the pieces so much, our favourite has to be the Camelia headdress which is made using a selection of shades, pearls and crystals from Swarovski. The Imogen headdress is also a very popular choice and one of our favourites.

Sumptuous Sicilian weddings

This time last week I was laid on a glorious beach in Sicily soaking up the sun and enjoying a well earned rest. During the week I was there I saw seven weddings all in the beautiful town of Taormina on the Eastern side of the island and wanted to share with you the styles the brides were sporting.

In a country where police uniforms are designed by Armani we all know that the Italians have a sophisticated style that very few other countries are able to imitate and the bridal parties I spotted were no different. The grooms all immaculately dressed in navy suits whilst most of the brides opted for white gowns rather than ivory, to symbolise purity.

The dresses were on key for Spring 2010 all embellished with flowers ranging from tiny to large. Ruffled tiers from the waist down were also a key feature.

Most brides chose to wear their hair up and opted for headpieces which were simple yet elegant such as Jo Barnes Effie headdress and the Filippa Scott pearl leaf tiara.

If you need any other suggestions for accessories to accompany an Italian wedding email info@pearlandwillow.co.uk

Filippa Scott's fabulous Jewels collection

We’re so excited to announce the arrival of the Filippa Scott Jewels collection.

The collection chosen for Pearl & Willow features jewellery and bridal hair accessories that combine feminine design with vintage styling. Pieces range from exquisite vintage inspired brooches to pearl and diamante tiaras. With pieces to suit every bride we couldn’t resist showcasing a wide range.

The collection has a piece that will entice any bride looking for that special accessory on her special day. We were thrilled with Filippa’s first collection and wanted to be part of the first season. We hope that Pearl & Willow brides agree that the Jewels collection is a enticing addition to the website.

One of our favourite pieces has to be the delectable pineapple earrings priced at £95, which would add a touch of elegance to any outfit but are also something which could be worn again and again. We also adore the double brooch headband with its glittering crystals and vintage feel; perfect for a summer wedding and an excellent price point of £120.

Va va voom vintage headpieces

One evening in March I received an email from a designer looking to showcase her range of original vintage and vintage-inspired hair accessories. I receive these emails quite often and it’s very rare that I feel the pieces would complement our existing collections but i decided to take a peek at the range anyway and gosh I’m glad I did!

Jo Barnes began her love affair with vintage accessories when she made her own bridal bouquet using her grandmother’s pearl bracelet, earrings and brooches all from the 1940s. Jo now creates stunning hair accessories perfect for any vintage loving bride-to-be.

Here at Pearl & Willow we have a small collection of original vintage pieces, all ‘one-offs’ ensuring your piece is completely unique and a larger range of Jo’s vintage-inspired hair accessories. All the pieces are made using only the finest fabrics, feathers, crystals, pearls and vintage jewellery.

Our favourite is the limited edition Flo headpiece which harks back to bygone days when feminine features were celebrated and sparkle was key. We look forward to adding more to the collection and will of course let you know when we do. All the headbands can be wrapped in either brown or silver ribbon. Simply let us know at the checkout.

J'adore vintage brooches

As vintage sweeps the nation we take a look, at the often more affordable option, brooches. There’s no better day than your wedding day to add some extra sparkle; and a brooch is the perfect option to add that va va voom, it can also double up as your ‘something old’!

Accessorising with a vintage brooch will definitely add sparkle and there are so many ways a brooch can be worn. Some brides choose to clip their brooch to their wedding gown to create an extra focal point, whereas others often add them onto bridesmaids sashes. They can also be added to your shoes, to a piece of jewellery or to a headband. The best news is that vintage brooches don’t need to break the bank and can be collected from vintage fairs or pretty stores such as Pearl & Willow for same price as you’d spend on a small supermarket shop.

The limits are endless, all you need is some vision.

Visit our treasure trove of brooches for some inspiration. Here are just a few to tempt you!

Oh so feminine

Apologies for the lack of posts lately, wedding season is really kicking in at Pearl & Willow HQ, and we’ve been rushed off our feet, literally.

We couldn’t let the awards season slip by though without swooning over some of the beautiful hairstyles of the rich and famous. We hope these photos provide you with some inspiration for your special day.

We just adore the relaxed bohemian look of these leading ladies!

Simply add a pair of chandelier earrings such as Stephanie Browne’s Astor or Charleston or add a vintage comb to add some extra sparkle.

Maybe you’re thinking of wearing your hair down. If so why not add an embellished clip or on trend hair band. We think these on screen sirens look beautiful.

Wedding traditions

Whilst browsing twitter today one of my followers tweeted this lovely wedding fact

‘In Ancient Rome a kiss was legally binding. A public kiss between two betrothed people meant as much as the exchange of rings’.

This got me thinking about where today’s wedding customs originated and why we include them in our weddings today?

Diamonds are a girls best friend!

Apparently due to old traditions we wear our engagement and wedding rings on our left hand as was this was believed to be directly linked to the heart. This is also why we wear our wedding band on the inside of our engagement ring as its closer to our hearts!  How beautiful!

Diamonds as the favourite precious stone for engagement rings only really became popular in 1920s America when the jewellers DeBeers began advertising. Even today many countries opt for other precious stones as the focal point of their engagement ring.

A precious gem which has always been linked with marriage is our favourite, the pearl. In Ancient Rome and Greece pearls demonstrated the wealth of its wearer and it was believed that if a bride wore pearls she would be happy in her marriage with few tears.

You must now kiss the bride!

Another tradition we can thank the Ancient Romans for is the kiss at the end of a marriage ceremony. As mentioned, in Roman law a kiss was legally binding therefore when newlyweds share their kiss at the altar today they are really binding their agreement.

What’s all the clatter about?

Why do we ring the church bells before the bride enters the church? Probably even stranger is the tradition of tying cans to the bumper of the wedding car or clinking the champagne flutes before the speeches. Its all due to ancient traditions that believe that noise wards away evil spirits.

If you know the reasons behind any other popular wedding traditions, we’d love to hear them! Simply leave us a comment.
